In 1998 my youngest brother, Kelton, was diagnosed with autism, a developmental disability that affects communication and social interaction. Autism currently affects 1/88 people in the United States. Kelton is a talented individual who runs cross-country and track, wrestles, plays the drums, loves history, and collects bobble heads and keychains.

This year Kelton decided to enroll in his first art class where he discovered his skill for drawing. His unorthodox style made me reconsider my artwork and examine the differences and similarities that exist between our perspectives. According to Paul Collins’ Not Even Wrong: Adventures in Autism, artists are four times more likely to have autism in their families. Considering the number of artists in my family, this statistic made me question the similarities that exist between Kelton and me. For this reason, we have decided to draw one of his 6,481 keychains a day for one year. These drawings will be as simple and uninhibited as possible. This project will explore our individual perspectives and examine the similarities that exist between us as artists.

These comics are from a blog that I constantly check about an owl and line with autism. I think the artist does a great job showing autism and its characteristics. These are two of my favorites.

Day 282

A couple months ago my Mom and I went to a transition conference in Bellingham to learn more about post-secondary options for Kelt. This is one of the worksheets that we got, but just had Kelt fill it out today. I thought some of his choices were interesting, especially the fact that he chose child-care out of options such as computer work, sporting goods, bookstore, mall, grocery store, and pet care, etc. I never thought he'd enjoy working with kids. I would like to do more activities like this one with him to get ideas for next year.

Since school and sports are done, Kelt's been spending most of his time working on history. So far this summer he's studied the Siege of Leningrad, Civil War, WWII, Siege of Pittsburgh, and Reconstruction. He studies by copying articles and books into journals, but makes the language simpler and more concise. Right now he has 20 journals filled, each with a different category.

Dick Tracy: blind contour drawing of 1/159 of Kelt's bobble heads.

These drawings are blind except when I briefly look at the paper to set the pen. This series represents Kelt's uninhibited drawing style and enhanced visual skills. To view more, click the bobble head label to the right.

This photo is apart of series that I started with my BFA. This collection resembles Andy Warhol and the potential and unique perspective of people with autism. This summer I'm going to make more of these pieces to represent Kelt and his abilities. To view more, go to Day 157.

I recently came across this book, which features 55 artists with autism!

"The book shows that autism has no boundaries and manifests differently in each person diagnosed. Inspiring and myth defying, the art spans a range of emotion and subject material." To learn more, go to Artism Today.

Finally done!

Kelt got a standing ovation from his friends.

Bus trip: went to an indoor theme park in Langley, BC.

Overall, I'd say he had a good time.

Day 268

Kelt's getting ready to graduate! He'll be walking in the next couple of hours. After he's done he's going to Vancouver, B.C. for the high school grad trip, which is a surprise! Tomorrow I'll post photos from grad and the trip.

1/31 keychains from the party

Today Kelt had his graduation party with two of his best friends. There were over 100 guests and he got 31 keychains and 1 bobble head! Now he has 6,098 keychains and 159 bobble heads. Tomorrow's the big graduation day!

Day 261

Last night I saw a story about emerging Australian artist Aelita Andre who's only four-years-old! She's already being compared to artists such as Jackson Pollock and Salvador Dali and has a solo exhibition at Agora Gallery in New York City June 4 - 25. I love the uninhibited nature of her work, which is the same appeal that I find with Kelt's.

Piece #12, raffia

This is the 12th piece for our sculpture project. We haven't written the artist statement yet, but want to work with a variety of materials, such as wax, glue, and clay, etc., to see what Kelt likes. I'm curious to observe his process and learn if sculpture is a medium that he enjoys. I'm also interested in his relationship with the different materials. So far he's enjoyed wrapping and tying the most.

The materials are also important because people with autism often have unique responses to sensory stimuli. Examples include high threshold for pain, oversensitivity to sounds or being touched, exaggerated reactions to light or odors, or fascination with certain stimuli, etc. Hypersensitivities and/or hyposensitivities vary depending on the individual; for people with autism the continuum can range from no reaction to responses in all five senses.

This material was inspired by artists from the Tjanpi Desert Weavers organization.
